Our programs change often, below are some of our commonly offered programs. 

Employment Programs

We offer a variety of employment programs to help learners prepare for their future.

LAUNCH
Find a Job you Enjoy and Keep it!

The LAUNCH program is a pre-employment program. Its purpose was to help learners not just find employment, but find long-term employment that is meaningful to them. LAUNCH was broken down into three main components.1, identifying who the student is, 2, identifying what they want to do for employment, and 3, how to successfully be employed in the career of their choice.

This Employment-focused program is designed to guide you in identifying your talents, upgrading the skills you need, and learning how to match your skills with employer job postings. You will be able to develop the new skills required to get the interview, secure the job and keep it!

Activities may include but are not limited to:

  • Identifying career path

  • Job search and reading job postings

  • Customizing cover letters 

  • Mock interviewing 

  • Personal elevator pitch 

  • Workplace scenario training

Digital Skills 101
Technology & digital Literacy

This is a technology course for individuals with no technology experience to those with intermediate skills. You can work through the general technology skills program, "Northstar" or come with your own personal goal to learn. This hands-on program will have an instructor present to help you every step of the way. topics include but are not limited to:

​

  • Computer and Internet basics 

  • Microsoft Office

  • Social media and information literacy 

  • Google search and web browsing 

  • Setting up your personal laptop, tablet or cellphone

​

Upgrading Programs

Learn the skills you need to get your grade 12 or prepare for your next step in life

Canadian Adult Education Credential

The CAEC (Previously the GED) is a set of five tests that, when passed, certify the test taker as having met high school-level equivalency. Subjects are:

  • Language Arts: Writing

  • Language Arts: Reading

  • Science

  • Social studies

  • Mathematics

You prepare for and write one subject at a time, completing each computer-based test at NSCC, Amherst Campus. It is free to write, and you don’t need to rewrite any tests you have already passed.

​

Learners registering for this program will be assessed on each subject to determine where they need instruction and practice. They will then work independently and in a group environment with staff support to prepare for their chosen test.

Prepare for Next Steps

Designed to help adults develop a variety of essential skills needed to learn, live, and work in their communities. Adults enrolled in the program will be able to work toward a number of personal goals, which may include the following:

​

  • improving literacy, math, problem-solving, critical-thinking, & teamwork skills

  • acquiring the Nova Scotia High School Graduation Diploma for Adults

  • preparing to write the GED test to further employment opportunities

  • entering the workforce

  • preparing to enter a post-secondary institution

Makes Math Easy!

Math Club is a program for those struggling with the basics of Math and preparing for the Math CAEC test. It will be a combination of independent work, class lessons, and online worksheets. Students will start with the foundations of mathematics and build on their skills from there.

Experiment Your Way to Success

Unlock the wonders of Science with our hands-on Science Prep program, designed to equip students with all the necessary skills to excel in the new CAEC test. Through a series of dynamic experiments, students will gain practical knowledge and a deeper understanding of scientific principles, making learning both interactive and fun.

Explore the World of Knowledge
Protect Yourself

Cyber Security is a short 4-week program designed to equip learners with essential knowledge to navigate the digital world safely. The course covers critical topics such as strong password creation, recognizing phishing attempts, setting up and understanding multi-factor authentication, and understanding virus protection.

Unlock Your Writing Potential

In “Always Write”, we will focus on improving your writing skills through instruction, practice, and feedback. We will talk about how we can express ourselves clearly and effectively, whether you are interested in writing creatively, for work, or for communicating through written letters or emails.

Prepare to succeed in the new CAEC test with our comprehensive Social Studies Prep program. Covering key areas such as civics, economics, history, and geography, this program provides a holistic understanding of Social Studies, empowering students with the knowledge needed to grasp complex concepts and excel academically.

Life Skills Programs

Learn skills to work you excel in the classroom, at home and in the workplace! 

Coping Skills
Mental Wellness Skills for Work & Life

This program gives students the building block of mental wellness, coping strategies to deal with difficult thoughts, and lifestyle habits to support healthy thinking. The program is framed around the relationship of thoughts, behaviours and feelings, the goal is to have students take control of that relationship rather than have it control you. These goals are achieved through a discussion-based, group class. Online version is available.

Activities have included but are not limited to:

  • Basic Habits for healthy Mental Wellbeing

  • Mindfulness and relaxation

  • Managing powerful emotions

  • Combating negative thoughts

  • Positive communication and conflict resolution

  • Substance use and the mind

immerse yourself in the great outdoors with CANU Explore, our innovative wellness program that blends mindfulness with essential survival skills. Through engaging activities in nature, participants will reconnect with the natural world and gain deeper insights into themselves. This unique program encourages personal growth and a profound appreciation for the environment.

Unleash Your Inner Artist
Adventure into Self-Discovery

Discover the therapeutic power of art with our Creative Expression program, where mindfulness and relaxation are fostered through diverse art projects. By exploring art history and experimenting with various artistic mediums, students will not only develop their creative skills but also learn more about themselves through the process of artistic discovery.

Anger Managemnt 
The role anger plays in our lives

Join us at Feed our Community, and be part of something special. Together, we can cook delicious meals, share stories, while providing recipes and ingredients to other community members once per month. We are working to help build a stronger community together.

Do you often feel overwhelmed by anger? You're not alone. Anger is a natural emotion, but when it spirals out of control, it can impact your relationships and well-being.

We understand that managing anger is not just about suppression; it's about understanding and channeling it positively. Join us to gather some tools to help you put anger in its place.
